You spend twenty minutes editing a photo, upload it to Instagram, and it comes back looking soft, grainy, and slightly smeared — like someone photocopied it twice. A few things the table does not make obvious. Portrait (4:5) is the most valuable real estate in the feed because it fills more of the phone screen as people scroll — you get more attention per post without any extra effort. Landscape is the opposite: it looks intentional for wide shots but gives you the least screen presence. Why Instagram ruins your photo quality

One nuance for graphics with text or sharp line art: JPEG quality matters more here than for photos. Low-quality JPEG wraps text in fuzzy halos. If your post is mostly type or flat color, push quality toward 90 or consider keeping it a PNG and letting Instagram convert it — flat areas survive that conversion better than they survive a low-quality JPEG encode.

Carousels: consistency is the whole game

A carousel is only as polished as its least consistent slide. If slide one is 1:1 and slide two is 4:5, Instagram locks the whole carousel to the first slide's ratio and crops the rest — often cutting off heads, captions, or product edges.
