Working within a 100KB ceiling
At 100KB you can comfortably keep a 600×600 pixel passport photo at quality 85–90, which is exactly the sweet spot most application portals expect. Larger source material forces a choice: an 800×1000 pixel document scan at quality 80 typically compresses to 90–130KB, so you will usually trim either resolution or quality. For identity photos, trim quality first and keep the pixels — a slightly noisy face passes human review far more often than a soft, downscaled one.
The DPI math behind this target is simple. Portals specify physical print sizes — 2×2 inches for US and Indian forms, 35×45mm for Schengen and UK applications — and at the standard 300 DPI those translate to 600×600 and 413×531 pixels respectively. Rejections at this tier are rarely about the byte count alone. Portals also check the container (many accept only JPG, so the browser’s JPEG output is the safe format), the exact pixel dimensions, and occasionally the photo’s recorded age.
